Summaries of Kaimanawa Forest Park Sika Management Hunts

The Department of Conservation has allowed recreational hunting interests, including the NZDA, Hunters & Habitats Inc and Sika Foundation, to identify and access increasing numbers of strategic helicopter landing sites within Kaimanawa Forest Park, to allow for additional recreational hunter effort in more isolated catchments, on the basis that these are used for “Management Hunts”.

As these hunts have become more popular, additional helipads have also been accessed in nearby Kaweka Forest Park to help satisfy the increasing demand. The attached data show the hunts are being effective at targeting breeding females, as well as helping educate hunters around more sustainable game management.
